Report of Committee Hearing on HB 4011 2003/04/03
Today the House Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Committee, under the chairmanship of Representative Sue Tabor, held a hearing on HB 4011, submitted by Representative Gene DeRossett. This bill is very short: “1927 LA 9 is repealed.”
1927 LA 9 says:
“Section 1. It shall be unlawful for any person to hunt for game with firearms, dogs, or otherwise on Sunday on any lands or premises of another in the county of Washtenaw in this state. The word “Sunday” as used in this act shall be deemed to mean the first day of the week.
“Sec.2 The presence of any person upon the land or premises of another on Sunday, with firearms in his possession, shall be deemed prima facie evidence of a violation of this act.”
The following people testified in favor of HB 4011, to repeal 1927 LA 9:
Rep. Gene DeRossett Hal Simpson, Michigan Dog Owners Association Dennis Knapp, DNR Eric Shaeffer, Washtenaw County resident David Felbeck, Washtenaw County resident and representing MCRGO
No one testified against the bill.
The Committee first voted 8 to 2 against a substitute bill that would have referred this question to the county for a vote.
The Committee then voted 8 to 1 to submit the bill to the House.
MCRGO will continue to monitor and act on this bill and other pro-firearms bills. Other than the representative of Michigan Dog Owners Association, no organization except MCRGO was there to fight for your rights.
